Kim Smith is vice president of Environment, Health and Safety for The Boeing Company, the world's largest aerospace company.

Appointed to this position in December 2011, Smith is responsible for leading Boeing's efforts to continuously reduce the environmental footprint of its global operations, products and services. In addition, she is responsible in leading Boeing's workplace safety programs and driving efforts to reduce injuries to zero.

Smith reports directly to John Tracy, Boeing chief technology officer and senior vice president of Engineering, Operations & Technology.

Prior to her current assignment, Smith was a director in Boeing Commercial Airplanes' Supplier Management organization and served as the company's program executive to Spirit AeroSystems. Named to this assignment in May 2009, she was responsible for all contracting efforts, supplier development, strategy development and performance tied to Spirit. This included oversight of Spirit AeroSystems' increased production of 737 fuselages and 747, 767, 777 and 787 structural components to meet an unprecedented demand for Boeing airplanes.

Smith originally joined Boeing in 1997, and has held a number of key positions at Boeing Commercial Airplanes including:

• Leading both the Auburn Machining and Emergent Operations and the Advanced Metal Structures units. Auburn Machining and Emergent Operations, with presence in Auburn, Everett and Renton, Wash., provides production and emergent parts and services to all Boeing Commercial Airplanes programs and customers around the world. Advanced Metal Structures is an industry leader in developing and producing super-plastic formed parts from titanium and other exotic hard metals.

• Senior management positions in Quality Assurance with both the 737 program and at BCA's Fabrication Division.
• Production engineering support for the Renton Wing Responsibility Center.
• Manufacturing Research and Development for the 737 and 757 programs.

Between 1999 and 2002, Smith worked at GKN Sinter Metals, a division of GKN plc, in Michigan, and served as plant manager. GKN Sinter Metals produces powdered metal parts for automotive and a wide range of other industries. As plant manager, she was responsible for all aspects of business, including manufacturing, quality, production engineering, materials management, facilities and finance.

Smith earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at Michigan State University and an Executive MBA from Seattle University.

Smith, 37, resides in the Seattle area with her husband and two children.
